Garden Mentor on Spring Gardening

260 days ago by gardenmentor | 2 comments »

March is crazy busy for this Seattle Garden Coach. I actually had some time in my own garden this weekend. I managed to get my sword ferns and epimedium cut back. (Love to remove the epimedium old foliage at the end of winter to help the flowers pop and then give me a flush of beautiful new leaves right after.) I divided and transplanted some Astilbe. I dug out a rose glow barberry that I plan to get rid of. And, I cleaned two mid-size rhodies and 4 azaleas out of one client’s garden to...

Irrigation #2: Burried pipe finished.

261 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 8 comments »

Well, after two days of digging.. Ok.. More like a few hours one day and more the next.. The underground section of piping is finished. Since the 1” galvanized pipe was old, and cut off in sections I needed to use a couple of 1 inch compression couplers. These were easy as crud to install, being comprised of rubber seals on either end and end caps which just tightened down by a wrench. Once I ground down the ends of the cut pipe, they just slipped on and joined right up. Coupler i...

My Container Gardens #1: The Beginning ... Finding just the right containers ...

261 days ago by GrandmaT | 21 comments »

I began pondering last fall about what I could do with a patch of earth that lined the whole side of the house and a portion of the driveway. This strip gets lot of sun and heat, all day. What came to mind was a Container Garden. Now I am not talking about just filling a few pots with flowers and calling “it a day”. What I have in mind are items that I can repurpose; or unusual garden pieces; or items that are just pretty to place among the flowers and various containers. So to...

Introduction

262 days ago by MikeNEW | 5 comments »

Hi everyone! Thanks for such a great welcome. I’ve been able to look around the site and at some of your profiles and the site seems wonderful. I thought I would share a little background on me and my gardening. I live in Shively, Kentucky, which is a town that sits in the larger city of Louisville. My wife and I have no children, although we do have two indoor cats. I’m a teacher and my wife is a grocery store clerk. We’ve owned our house for three years. Our indo...

Irrigation #1: Back Yard Watering Spigot

262 days ago by Scott Hildenbrand | 1 comment »

Well, the yard at one point in time had a spigot in the back yard, which is great because the veg garden is waaaaaaay in the back. But it was in such poor shape it wasn’t worth saving. As such I set about digging a trench and laying down pipe. I was lucky enough to have the pipe on hand, you see, it was at one time what supported the grapes. Not the best thing and I’d already replaced that with wire. So. My plan for this whole thing is a semi permanent system in which there ...
