« Part 5: I want candy(lily)! Part 6 of 2008 Growing Season series no next part

So, I’ve got this freakishly tall balloon flower plant…It blooms relatively late, and I actually had to stake it to keep it upright. But here you go, a four foot tall balloon flower:

Wow, what did you feed that thing? Mine is only about 12 to 15 inches tall!

Holy Cow!!! You ain’t kidding that you are growing a “Balloon Tree”!! It looks really healthy and what a great conversation piece as you enter your porch/front door!!! I love it!!! :-)

Thanks all… This summer I’ve been so slammed with other big items that the only thing I fed it was a shot of Miracle Grow back in May…

I have no idea how this thing got so big. It’s some freakish specimen from a mail order shop in Oregon…

I used to grow the baloon flowers too but never did they even come close to being that tall.Mine always grew short and bushy. You should save some seeds from it and see if they get that tall next year.

Wow. I’ve never had one that tall. Was it searching for light? In part shade, they will get a lot taller.

I’ve tried several times to grow balloon flowers .. nothing
this year I finally got one and it was so beautiful (notice the “was”)
It was getting lost where it was so I transplanted it by my metal sculptures. It continued to do well, as if I hadn’t even touched it… and then.. and then..
Gabby decided that the little patch of freshly turned soil would be her newest favourite spot to lay down on and I now have a squished and broken balloon flower.
I tried surrounding it with rocks.. nope.. that didn’t fizz on big ol’ Gabby and she squished the plant even more. I now put up a plastic “fence” around it. It’s safe, but will it survive?? Just have to wait and see.
